House Guests
“I need to make the bed.” Her arms were full of sloppily folded sheets, none of which matched, and her dark hair stuck to her temples. Pink and purple stains streaked her sweater, and her once-white shoes were covered in coffee-brown smears.
“Don’t blow me off.” Her hair was a dark auburn that made her features more striking. She wore a crisp navy button down under a thick fisherman’s sweater, the light gray of which matched the overcast sky.
“This pile is getting heavy.”
“So let me carry it.” She reached her arms out toward her daughter.
“No, it was on the list.” She snatched the sheets away from her mother with a huff. She smelled like sweat and laundry detergent. Her mom smelled like perfume and fresh herbs.
“You love lists.”
“Yeah, I love lists when it’s like ‘Buy ice cream, chop bell peppers, call Grandma—”
